In order to counter
the projected shortfall of workers within the construction industry,
the CITB has sponsored the creation and training of Construction Ambassadors.
The aim is for these Construction Ambassadors to promote the industry
to young persons within schools and colleges, so as to raise awareness
of the benefits and possibilities within the industry.
In
terms of becoming a Construction Ambassador, the requirement is to be
working within a relevant position and to have the desire and motivation
to promote the industry to young persons. This promoting takes the form
of talks, tasks and challenges, and usually operates around the requirements
of the situation. For instance, in a primary school environment it is
more appropriate to focus on a fun task based on construction (such
as bridge building) whereas in colleges it is more practical to have
an informative talk about specific roles and responsibilities.
One
of the key elements in this promoting is that the CITB make schools
and teachers aware of what can be arranged, and then leave it down to
them to follow it up. There is no hard sell, and even when an event
is being held the emphasis is on showing what the industry can offer
as opposed to steamrollering young persons into a career.
From
my personal experience, I can confirm that the initial training received
is fantastic, and not only instils confidence in personal ability but
also a sense of pride in relation to the construction industry. After
the two day course, the CITB co-ordinator for the area contacts the
new Construction Ambassadors to welcome them aboard and advise that
they will be called upon as and when needed.
For
myself, this calling upon was about a month and a half after I completed
the course and I will be attending a school in south Ashford to give
a talk to students on the newly piloted GCSE Construction. The talk
will be about my own role as a quantity surveyor including details of
my route from school, onto a Construction Foundation Degree, including
my industry placement at Limen Construction Limited and the possibilities
for the future.
The
Construction Ambassador program is a great way to get those within the
industry to give others exposure of what is on offer. All too often
construction is not thought of as a career but as a job, and yet when
there is so much on offer in terms of work satisfaction and diversity,
construction should be at the fore of any careers advice.
